A Little Bit of History

The first major expansion of W.H. Ireland and Sons took place in 1960 when Irelands went "across the road" to a new Caltex service station, machinery showroom and used machinery display area.

Built at a cost of ten thousand pounds, it took place ten years after the late Bill Ireland and his wife Jean and two of their four children arrived from Penrith.

Bill Ireland's principles of family unity have borne fruit with his son Tony and wife Sue and their son Andrew all working in the business.

Moving into the agricultural machinery field through the 1950's and into the 1960's, Ireland's were noted for hay baling and hay handling machines, particularly New Holland with whom they had a very long association. In those days there were probably twenty contractors working around the district, all using New Holland equipment. Major tractor and tillage dealerships were held, as well as a big business in used machinery.

However, Bill and his eldest son Tony (who is now Managing Director of the Ireland's group of companies) could perceive the winds of change within the industry. They moved into new types of products based on small engines such as chainsaws manufactured by Husqvarna and Toro lawn and garden equipment, to add to their existing range of lawnmowers (Ireland's were the first Victa Mower agents in the district).

The Hire Plant Division sold twelve years ago made way for the construction of the 24-hour Convenience Store, which was remodeled five years ago to it's present state.

Now celebrating its 60th year in business, W.H. Ireland and Sons (Machinery) Pty Ltd owes its existence to the dedication of the principles of family unity and the loyal patronage of their local customers. Ireland's devoted team ensures their continued success.
